Suspicious Powder Prompts Quarantine At Brooklyn School

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- FDNY hazardous materials crews were called to a Brooklyn school Thursday evening, and some people inside were quarantined, after a report of suspicious powder.

Around 7:30 p.m., the FDNY Hazmat team was called to P.S. 130 the Parkside School and M.S. 839, at 713 Caton Ave., on the cusp of Kensington and Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, officials said.

A parent of a student arrived had at the school with his personal mail brought from home, police sources told CBS2. While he was waiting at the school, he opened his mail inside the building and white powder spilled from an envelope, sources said.

A number of people in the immediate area were quarantined as a precaution, and the remainder of the building was evacuated.

Police and FDNY Hazmat crews remained on the scene late Thursday, evaluating the quarantined individuals and testing the white powder as a precaution, sources said.

The rest of the school was evacuated.

There was no indication the substance was actually hazardous.

The school was open Thursday night for parent-teacher conferences.
