Suspect Charged In Murder In Coney Island Public Housing Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of a man the day after Christmas in a public housing development in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

Johnny Velez Garriga, 23, was charged with murder in the death of Shawn White, 25, in the Coney Island Houses building at 2925 W. 27th St. in Brooklyn, police said.

Police found White's body inside the building around 9:30 p.m. this past Dec. 26. White was found in the fourth-floor stairwell with gunshot wounds to the head, torso and leg and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police did not indicate a suspected motive for the slaying.

Victim White was arrested in March of last year for allegedly punching two police officers during a traffic stop at 23rd Street and Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn, and had two previous arrests for drug dealing in 2008 and 2009, according to a DNAInfo report.
