Suspect Charged In Shooting Of Newark Police Officer

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The man accused of shooting a Newark police officer in the leg on Wednesday has been charged.

Bail was set at $250,000 for 26-year-old Donald Easterling, of Newark, authorities said.

Easterling is charged with aggravated assault, robbery and weapons offenses after he allegedly shot a 19-year veteran of the police department.

The shooting took place while police were responding to an armed robbery call around 3 p.m. at 301 Clinton Ave., said Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office said there was a confrontation with Easterling that ended with the officer being shot. Easterling was also shot.

Both have been released from the hospital and Easterling was being held at the Essex County Jail Thursday night.

Authorities have not released the name of the injured officer.
