Forecast: Freezing Temps Back Again After Warmer, Rainy Sunday

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --  The snow that blanketed New York City streets early Saturday morning didn't stick around long.

On Sunday morning, travelers were faced with thick blankets of fog and scattered showers, as temperatures rose into the upper 40s, accompanied by light winds from the north and northwest.

Though temperatures are expected to hit highs around 58 degrees in New York City, the warmer weather isn't expected to last long, with temperatures plunging to a low of 24 degrees through Sunday night. Winds will also pick up in the afternoon, with gusts of up to 25 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service said overnight lows reached the minus 20s and lower across much of the northern Plains on Sunday morning as a fresh surge of bitter arctic air reached into the Midwest.

Weather-related delays at Indianapolis International Airport caused about 100 passengers to spend the night in the terminal, but most travelers were on their way Sunday morning.

Chicago police say a commercial plane slid off a runway early Sunday at O'Hare International Airport. There were no injuries reported from the incident just after 1 a.m.
