Tornadoes Touch Down On Long Island, In Connecticut

PECONIC, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Small tornadoes touched down in Suffolk County and Connecticut Wednesday as severe storms passed through the area.

A weak EF-0 tornado was confirmed near Mattituck in Suffolk County around 4:25 p.m., the National Weather Service reported.

Its wind speed topped out at 70 mph and its path was 0.3 miles, the NWS said.

There were no deaths or injuries associated with the tornado. Information about property damage was not immediately available.

Meanwhile, CBS affiliate WFSB-TV, Hartford reported, that the NWS confirmed a small tornado touched down in North Haven, Connecticut.

It was described as a weak EF-0 tornado on the Fujita scale. But the winds reached speeds of 70 mph across the 2.16-mile path of the tornado, and trees and power lines were knocked down in the Montowese section of North Haven, WFSB reported.

Several homes were also damaged.

CBS2's Lonnie Quinn reported a scattered storm chance will persist Wednesday night, and another round of popup storms are likely on Thursday.
