The incident, along with several investigations into adults who have drowned in backyard swimming pools this summer, has prompted Suffolk officials to remind residents of safety precautions that can be taken at all times.

"For adults, do not go swimming when you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Ideally, you should never swim alone just in case you have some type of medical emergency," said Suffolk County Police Chief Kevin Fallon.

"When it comes to children, never, never leave children unattended. Also, you should have a fence around the swimming pool to keep children out."

Chief Fallon also suggested installing a pool alarm and enrolling your children in classes to learn how to swim.
