Suffolk Lawmaker Seeks To Ban Sale Of Puppy Mill Pets

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - There's an effort on Long Island to end the sale of puppy mill pets.

As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported from Riverhead, legislation under consideration in the Suffolk County legislature would effectively shut down the practice.

"By making it so that the pet dealers can no longer purchase these animals, animals that are bred by breeders that don't meet certain basic ethical standards," bill sponsor Jay Schneiderman told Xirinachs.

The measure also calls for more pet shop inspections, new caging standards and tougher penalties for violators.

"It is a $500 fine per violation," said Schneiderman.

The legislation is being fine-tuned, Xirinachs reported.

Schneiderman said his effort has a strong base of support.
