1 Arrest, 57 Summonses Issued At Motorcycle Safety Checkpoint In Suffolk

YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County Police issued more than 50 summonses to motorcyclists at a safety checkpoint on the Long Island Expressway Sunday.

According to officials, the Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol Bureau conducted the safety checkpoint on the eastbound lanes of the LIE between exits 65 and 66 in Yaphank.

Highway Patrol officers stopped a total of 134 motorcycles between 11:05 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. as they passed through the checkpoint, police said.

Officers issued 57 summonses for safety violations that included unlicensed operators, uninspected, uninsured and unregistered motorcycles, modified exhaust systems, and unapproved helmets.

Additionally, police arrested a North Babylon man after he allegedly tried to avoid the checkpoint.

Robert Russo, 43, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree, police said. He was also issued summonses for improper U-turn and pedestrian walking on the highway.

police said Russo's license had been suspended 17 times.
