Suffolk DA Tom Spota Not Offended FBI Is Handling Corruption Investigation

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota says he's not bothered that the county sheriff has asked the FBI to investigate corruption allegations against one of his lieutenants.

Sheriff's Lt. Ed Walsh, who is also chairman of Suffolk's Conservative Party, is accused of taking more than $50,000 in overtime pay for hours he didn't work, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.

Walsh's political party has endorsed Spota for re-election.

"Believe me, this district attorney's office has plenty of work and plenty of investigations," Spota said. "This is not breaking my heart that the FBI is going to investigate Ed Walsh."

Spota said he'll consider looking at the case after the FBI completes its investigation.

According to Newsday, Sheriff Vincent DeMarco moved to terminate Walsh on July 15. Walsh is contesting his termination, and under civil service rules, he's allowed to collect his salary while his case is pending.
