Suffolk County Nixes Speed Cameras In School Zones

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- There will be no school zone speed cameras in Suffolk County.

County Executive Steve Bellone said Monday that he and county legislators have decided to nix the idea, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.

"Based on what we've seen and all the information we've collected, (it) doesn't make sense now to start making the significant investments in the central program," he said.

Bellone admitted that public anger over the speed camera program in Nassau County and other places around the nation played into Suffolk's decision to not move forward with the idea.

"We have evolved in terms of our thinking as we've gotten a deeper understanding of some of the issues," he said.

Bellone said the county Legislature will consider other public safety measures around schools, perhaps speed bumps and more police patrols.
