Suffolk Cop Rescues Woman From Car Submerged In Water At Bay Shore Marina

BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An elderly woman was rescued by Suffolk County police after her car went into the water at Bay Shore Marina on Saturday.

Authorities said a witness called 911 around 1:10 p.m. and reported that a woman drove into the water.

When officers arrived at the marina, they found the car submerged in water and a 97-year-old woman stuck inside with water up to her neck.

Police said the windows in the car were rolled up and the doors were locked, so Officer Nicholas Aspromgos broke through the window and pulled the woman out.

Suffolk County Police Sgt. Alex Spencer told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten that Aspromgos "utilized a window punch to break the window."

A Good Samaritan then helped the officer lift the woman onto the dock, police said.

Police are still investigating how the car wound up in the water, but Spencer said she may have accidentally hit her accelerator, 1010 WINS reported.

"According to the officer, she was a little delirious. It may have been from either the events that happened, the exposure to the cold water -- she was up to her neck in the water in her vehicle," Spencer said.

The woman was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities credit Aspromgos' quick thinking with saving the woman's life, CBS2's Matt Kozar reported.

Police said they don't know the identity of the Good Samaritan. They said the person just walked away from the scene after the woman was pulled to safety.

The car was removed from the water with the help of a tow truck and Suffolk Marine Bureau officers.
