Street In Chinatown Renamed In Memory Of Private Danny Chen

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Hundreds of people took to the streets of Chinatown Saturday for a special tribute to honor the memory of a local soldier.

City officials unveiled Private Danny Chen Way on Elizabeth Street between Canal Street and Bayard Street.

The 19-year-old soldier from Chinatown committed suicide in Afghanistan in 2011. He endured hazing by his own squad for being Chinese-American.

"We are doing this today to remind us that hazing and bullying exists in this country and it is wrong," said one woman during the ceremony.

Chen's death galvanized the entire community and shined a spotlight on the dark culture of bullying and hazing in the military.
