Stories From Main Street: At 96, Hartsdale Yoga Instructor Still Going Strong

HARTSDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A nearly 100-year-old Hartsdale yoga instructor is proving age is all in your mind.

At 96, Tao Porchon Lynch is one of the oldest yoga instructors in the world, according to the Guinness World Records.

"When people talking about me and saying, 'you know 96, you mustn't do this, you mustn't do that.' I say, 'you know something, look at the forest and all of the incredible trees around. They are hundreds of years old,'" she told WCBS 880's Sean Adams.

She is spry, fit, slim, wears three-inch heels and still drives a smart car. Tao uses yoga to find balance.

"Joining body, the mind and spirit," she said.

Born in India, Tao says she met Gandhi twice as a young girl.

"I had a very wonderful uncle who was a friend of Gandhi and I marched with Gandhi when I was 12 years old," she said.

Half French, Lynch went to Paris to model and act. During World War II, she fought with the French resistance.

Marcia Mendell has been Tao's student for 32 years.

"She just is magical," she said. "Whenever you're in her presence, you just feel good."

"Smile at the world," Tao said. "There's a power at smiling at the world."
