Stolen Replica Ruby Slippers Returned To Hilton Garden Inn On Staten Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - There's no place like home.

An unidentified man returned a pair of ruby red slippers stolen from the Hilton Garden Inn on Staten Island.

The slippers, replicas of the ones made famous in "The Wizard Of Oz," were stolen earlier this month.

Last week, hotel owners Richard and Lois Nicotra - along with the NYPD - asked for the public's help recovering the $2,500 slippers.

The NYPD circulated a photo of a woman who they said was caught ruby red handed on surveillance tape stealing the shoes. The surveillance tape shows two men helped lift the display case housing the shoes and the woman stuffing them into her pocket book, Richard Nicotra told CBS 2's Scott Rapoport last week.

"Last night, an unidentified man dropped off a bag at the front desk... instructing the agent to 'give this to Richard Nicotra,'" the Nicotras said in a statement. "Later that night, we opened the bag and found the replica ruby red slippers wrapped in white tissue paper. The slippers are a bit worn, but otherwise perfect."

The Nicotras thanked the NYPD and media outlets for publicizing the theft.

They add that the display will be modified to prevent a repeat.
