Bronx Man Busted For Allegedly Stealing $50,000 Powerball Ticket From Friend
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A friend was betrayed over a winning lottery ticket, and now his former pal is in jail.
It happened during the frenzy over the record setting $1.6-billion Powerball jackpot in January.
Victor Castillo, 66, of the Bronx, said that what his friend did during the heat of the record drawing when everyone was lining up for tickets, was an unbelievable betrayal.
Speaking Spanish, Castillo said he has no idea why Rubeline Segura, 40, would steal a winning Powerball ticket worth $50,000 from him.
The victim, a livery cab driver, said Segura grabbed the winning ticket and went into a bodega to check it. He came back with a torn up ticket and claimed that it wasn't worth anything. Castillo showed CBS2 how Segura slammed it down in the back of his car.
Castillo checked with bodega workers who told him the ticket matched four winning numbers and the Powerball, so he called the police.
The day after the drawing the suspect tried to cash the winning ticket at the Empire City Casino at the Yonkers Raceway, but that's where his luck ran out.
Raceway workers checked the ticket, which had been flagged as stolen in the computer, and Segura got nothing.
Frank Bobole works at the livery cab service with both the suspect and the victim. He called Segura nice guy.
"He nice guy. He nice man," Bobole said.
Castillo said he and the suspect are certainly not friends any longer, and hasn't gotten his $50,000 just yet.
