Driver Charged After 19-Year-Old Woman Killed In Staten Island Crash
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 22-year-old man faces charges after a crash on Staten Island left one woman dead and another critically injured.
Alize Jorge, 19, was killed when the Mitsubishi sedan she was in slammed into a traffic pole at Richmond Avenue and Richmond Hill Road around 10:45 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Witnesses said another passenger was thrown from the car in the crash. The 18-year-old woman was found unconscious and unresponsive on the pavement, police said. She was taken to Staten Island University North Hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle -- identified as 22-year-old Hasim Smith -- was speeding to try to beat a red light and swerved to avoid another car before plowing head-on into the pole, police said.
He was arrested after allegedly trying to make a run for it and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
