State Lawmakers To Hold Hearings On Police Safety

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Albany lawmakers are holding joint committee hearings on police safety after the fatal shootings of two NYPD police officers.

As WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported, State Sen. Martin Golden says they want input from police officers, legal scholars, city and state officials, and district attorneys about police safety and hostility directed toward law enforcement.

"It gives a platform to find out if in fact legislation is needed, training is needed, what is community policing, how is it working," he said.

Golden, a former NYPD officer who now represents Brooklyn, says he's working with colleagues from four different committees to review policies and procedures.

"Use a system that is cohesive, that works together, that is good for all of the people of this great city and this great state," Golden said.

The hearings will begin in early January and be held in both Albany and New York City.
