Stamford Making Upgrades To Improve Street Safety

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Stamford is embarking on a yearlong effort to increase traffic flow in the city and improve street safety.

Mayor David Martin told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau the city plans to make street signage more consistent and synchronize traffic lights.

But he said pedestrians, too, must make an effort.

"We are seeing the distracted jaywalkers that are walking across interections with their heads down in their cellphones," Martin said.

"You put a distracted driver with a distraced pedestrian, and I think you have a fatality on your hands," the mayor said.

Martin said it may take a year to accomplish some of the significant engineering changes needed to ease the traffic flow in downtown Stamford.

On Wednesday, Stamford police began cracking down on distracted driving, writing 43 tickets for drivers using handheld electronic devices in the first three hours.
