Thieves Targeting Unlocked Cars In Stamford

STAMFORD, CONN. (CBSNewYork) -- Leaving your car unlocked is the same as giving thieves an invitation to rip you off, and it's been easy pickings in Stamford in recent months.

As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, it's as easy as a jiggle of the car handle and if it's unlocked, grab whatever you can.

That has been the pattern in Stamford, where police are investigating more than 200 car burglaries over the last two months, 20 of which were hit over the weekend.

In most cases, the cars were not locked, according to the Stamford Advocate.

Bedford Street near 4th and 5th streets was hard hit over the weekend, Adams reported.

Thieves also stripped tires from four vehicles this week, Adams reported.

Police are checking surveillance cameras in the area, which consists mostly of homes, townhouses and offices.
