Delivered By Dad: Woman Gives Birth To Baby Girl On The Sprain Brook Parkway

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A newborn baby was delivered on the Sprain Brook Parkway, and on Friday, a mother and father were sharing their Thanksgiving story.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, it was around 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day when Terrice Thomas' water broke, 4 days after the expected due date of her child.

Some 2 hours later, she and her husband Austin left their Mount Vernon home to Phelps' Hospital in Sleepy Hollow.

Her contractions were getting closer and closer together.

"So I hurried up and got in the car, and realized I'm not gonna make it here, 10 minutes into the drive, we have to pull over, and I'm like the baby is coming now, call 911," she said.

The couple was traveling north on the Sprain Brook Parkway when they pulled over just before the Jackson exit.

A 911 dispatcher walked them through what to do.

"I was saying 'the head is out, the head is here,' then he was like, 'ok, you gotta catch that baby, it's going to be slippery, it's going to be wet, don't let it fall, you gotta catch it,' and I was like 'alright man, I got this," Austin said.

The Thomas' were in disbelief.

"Afterwards, I kept saying, 'wow, I can't believe it," Austin said.

"You know what, that's the best Thanksgiving," Terrice added.

The dispatcher told Austin to use his shoelace to tie the umbilical cord until help arrived to take mom and baby to the hospital.

Not only will little Taliah have a birth story unlike any other, her middle name will be a reminder of where she was born.

"Her middle name is Brook, for the Sprain Brook," Terrice said.

The Thomas family will be released from the hospital on Saturday, and their little Thanksgiving Day miracle will be able to meet the rest of her family.
