Speed Cameras May Be Headed For Long Island School Zones

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Speed cameras may be heading for school zones across Long Island.

In an effort to combat speeding drivers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo is asking lawmakers to approve requests from Nassau and Suffolk counties for a camera at each of the 125 school districts.

According to current laws, drivers who speed can only be charged if a police officer catches them and issues a ticket.

The cameras would operate like the red light camera program already in place on Long Island.

It is unclear how much the pilot program would cost.

Last year, New York City installed 20 speed cameras near schools where speeding was a problem.

Cuomo included the proposal in amendments to the $142 billion executive budget being considered by the Legislature.
