SPCA: Reward Offered After Pit Bull Found Beaten, Abandoned On L.I.

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Suffolk County SPCA is offering a reward after they say a dog was found beaten and abandoned in Central Islip.

SPCA Chief Roy Gross said the dog, a pit bull, was found in the middle of the road Monday night at Route 111 and Sage Street.

Nurse Kathryn Negri, who discovered the dog and called 911, said the pup was close to death.

"He looked up at me with those sad eyes and my heart just broke," she told 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera. "It was so heartbreaking."

The dog had a cable around its neck and a bloody plastic bag was found nearby, Gross said.

"They must have put it in a black garbage bag, whether they tossed it out of a car or stopped the car and dumped it in the road, the dog apparently crawled out of the bag and was standing in the middle of the road with the cable still attached to it," he told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

The dog, nicknamed Rocky, was taken to Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island in West Islip where veterinarians determined he had been beaten and nearly strangled, Gross said. He also has some neurological damage.

"We named the dog Rocky because this dog, as much as he went down, he got right back up again," Gross said.

Despite his injuries, Rocky is recovering and will eventually be placed up for adoption.

"The dog is about a year and half old, he's a sweet dog," Gross said.

The SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
