1 Dead In Southern State Parkway Crash, Police Say

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man was killed in a one-car crash off the Southern State Parkway early Wednesday morning, police said.

Eugene Ellis, 37, of Islip Terrace, was driving westbound on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 37 in West Babylon at around 4:19 a.m. when his Hyundai Sonata went of the road and crashed into a utility pole, police said.

The vehicle then crashed into a nearby tree, which fell on the car and Ellis, who was still in the vehicle, police said.

Medical personnel pronounced Ellis dead on the scene, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
