Southbound Major Deegan Expressway Reopens After Multi-Vehicle Crash
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The deep freeze is creating dangerous conditions across the Tri-State area more than 24 hours after a storm buried the region in roughly a foot of snow.
Icy roads sent 11 cars careening into one another on the Major Deegan Expressway during the height of rush hour Thursday morning near Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, CBS 2's Kathryn Brown reported.
"I pushed the brake and that pushed my car to the left and then the snow catch my car and I'm spinning and the next car hit me," the driver at the front of the pack said.
"It was just a domino effect," one accident victim said.
Fran Niegocki of Rockland County was driving to work when the cars in front of her started spinning out of control.
"A whole mess of cars that were all smacked into each other," she said. "It happened so fast; thank God I'm alive."
Police were forced to shut down all southbound lanes and one northbound lane for emergency vehicles.
Banged up cars, shaken up drivers, and piles of debris mixed with slush and snow littered the highway for hours, Brown reported.
The vehicles were eventually loaded onto tow trucks and hauled away.
The roadway reopened around 8:45 a.m.
No serious injuries were reported.
