Southampton Elementary School Closes For Cleaning After Student Sickened By Enterovirus

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A student sickened by a strain of the Enterovirus has forced the closure of a school on Long Island.

The Southampton Elementary School was closed Wednesday after a student contracted Enterovirus, officials said.

School officials stressed, however, that the diagnosis was not the D68 strain that killed a New Jersey boy and has sickened countless kids across the country.

Regardless, Southampton Elementary School is getting a thorough cleaning as a precaution, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

"Well, we'll actually be applying an antibacterial coating that will protect from bacterial and viral growth for up to a year," explained Robert Madara, of Sanitech Services.

The school is expected to reopen Thursday and the infected student is being treated at a local hospital.
