South St. Seaport Resident: Neighborhood Is Still Struggling To Rebuild Following Sandy
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Following Superstorm Sandy, residents of Lower Manhattan's South Street Seaport know how hard it has been to recover and rebuild, as well as how bad the flooding can be.
On Saturday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city will spend an additional $8 million for Battery Park flood protection.
The city and state are already investing $6.75 million in Lower Manhattan as part of a climate adaption plan.
Mary Lou, who has lived in the neighborhood 40 years, told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten it's still a struggle.
"Happily, some people did make it and came back. We constantly try to support our neighborhood by using all the things that have opened around here and by being patrons to all the businesses that were able to refurbish and come back," she said.
She said anything the mayor can do to prevent a recurrence at the South Street Seaport and in Battery Park City comes as welcome news to both those who rode out the storm and stayed.
