Snow Alert Issued For NYC Ahead Of Predicted Wintry Mix

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Sanitation officials have issued a snow alert ahead of an incoming wintry blast of snow, freezing rain and sleet throughout New York City.

The Department of Sanitation says the alert goes into effect Monday morning.

The National Weather Service says a mixed bag of light snow, freezing rain and sleet are expected throughout the metro area beginning early Monday and into rush hour.

Forecasters say the wintry mix could transition to rain by the afternoon. They say temperatures hovered around 22 degrees Saturday afternoon but will drop to the mid-teens by the evening.

Many New Yorkers layered up to beat the cold Saturday, ahead of the wintry mix.

The Sanitation Department says officials are preparing salt spreaders, attaching snow plows and hooking up tire chains to ready for the storm.
