Smithtown Calls For New Animal Shelter With More Space

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A new animal shelter has been proposed for the town of Smithtown, Long Island.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, officials said there is just not enough room at the current shelter. The shelter is 4,000 square feet, but with more than 100 cats and 18 dogs – as well as chickens, ducks and peacocks – the supervisor is calling for a new shelter to be constructed.

George Beatty, who runs the shelter, told Hall that when the facility was completed in the 1950s, cats and dogs were only housed for a few days and were then euthanized.

But now, the animals have a permanent home if they do not get adopted.

"We also would require a cat room that can be divided into maybe three or four rooms. Right now, we just have one large cat room," Beatty said. "Cats can have a lot of communicable diseases. If we were able to separate them into smaller rooms, we could better manage that."

Beatty hopes the funding will be approved by the end of this year, and by the end of 2015, the new shelter would be constructed.
