Police: Woman Escapes From Custody, Steals Ambulance In Smithtown

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman escaped police custody at a Long Island hospital and stole an ambulance Thursday evening, police said.

The woman was under police guard at St. Catherina of Siena Medical center in Smithtown, when she escaped and stole the ambulance around 6 p.m., Suffolk County police said.

The woman crashed the ambulance into another vehicle a short time later, police said.

The woman and the victim from the other vehicle were rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police did not specify why the woman had been arrested originally.
