Skeletal Remains Found Off Long Island Nature Trail

SETAUKET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Police on Long Island are investigating after human remains were found off a nature trail, police said.

Suffolk County police said a hiker discovered the skeletal remains Sunday afternoon after observing deer gathered at the spot.

They say the remains were about 20 feet off the path and were not visible from the trail.

Police say the hiker saw some animals near the area and went to investigate.

According to authorities, the remains had been there for "some time.''

Police declined to provide any other information. Newsday reports that Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer said a forensic anthropologist and the medical examiner would conduct tests to determine the person's identity and cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about the remains to call 631-852-6395.
