Simulator Demonstrates Dangers Of Texting While Driving
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One second you're driving and texting an "LOL." The next second? "OMG," you slam into another car.
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, the New York City Department of Transportation and AT&T offered passersby a chance to use a texting-while-driving simulator Tuesday at Flatiron Plaza.
The experience was an eye-opener for many.
"You never quite feel like you're in control," Ben Watson told Haskell.
"It's good," added John Jelley. "It shows how dangerous it really is, and it makes you think again about doing it again."
The simulator is part of a larger texting-and-driving education campaign, said Marissa Shorenstein, president of AT&T in New York. She said the company wants drivers to understand the dangers of distracted driving.
"I've never seen anyone beat this (simulator) because every single person either crashes or swerves and can really harm either themselves or someone else," Shorenstein said.
