Shots Fired When Knife-Wielding Man Tries To Enter Conn. Submarine Base

GROTON, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two Navy civilian police officers were wounded Thursday night while confronting a knife-wielding man at a Connecticut base, authorities said.

Navy officials said an officer guarding the submarine base in Groton Thursday night fired shots at the man who allegedly had tried to enter through a pedestrian gate.

Authorities said two other officers were injured by the ricochet of bullets. They were taken to an area hospital.

Their conditions were not immediately available.

Officials said the suspect was taken into custody and turned over to Groton police. He was not injured. His name has not yet been released.

The investigation was ongoing late Thursday.
