Severe Storms Leave Trees Down, Prompt Tornado Watches

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Severe weather ripped down trees and prompted tornado watches across the area Monday.

High wind gusts took down a tree and smashed a car in East Meadow, Long Island Monday evening, CBS2 reported.

Tornado watches were also issued in Tuesday evening in Dutchess, Sullivan and Ulster counties in New York state, as well as Morris, Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey.

There were reports that a tornado touched down in the Allentown, Pennsylvania area, but the reports could not immediately be confirmed.

A funnel cloud was also spotted in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and tornado warnings were issued in Chester, Pennsylvania, CBS Philadelphia reported.

Rainfall totaled 1.83 inches in Greenville, 1.3 inches on Poughkeepsie, 1.23 inches in Middletown, and 1.01 inches in Pleasantville, and 0.6 inches in Red Hook, Brooklyn, CBS2's Lonnie Quinn reported.

Late Monday, strong storms were hovering over Manalapan, New Jersey, and were heading northeast toward New York City.

Scattered storm activity was expected to persist overnight, and some storm activity may persist into the morning commute, CBS2's Quinn reported.
