Several Hurt In Multicar Pileup In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A messy multicar pileup in Brooklyn on Sunday morning sent several people to the hospital.

The crash occurred around 5:20 a.m. on Flatbush Avenue near Empire Boulevard in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.

Witnesses told CBS2 a blue car was attempting to cross over into the left lane, allegedly trying to beat a red light, when the driver slammed into another vehicle, triggering a chain reaction between five vehicles.

"They could not get out," an SUV driver who was rear-ended said, referring to the occupants of another vehicle. "The Fire Department come, and they break the door and bring them out."

A few passengers in the blue car, which was badly damaged, and another vehicle complained of serious neck and back pain, police said. They were rushed to area hospitals.

Police have not released the official cause of what triggered the pileup.

Flatbush Avenue has reopened after being shut down for several hours.
