Sentencing Pushed Back For L.I. Man Who Faked His Own Drowning

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - The man who pleaded guilty to faking his own death at Jones Beach will have to wait to find out his fate.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, Raymond Roth's sentencing was pushed back to April 24 due to missing paperwork from the probation department.

Roth's attorney and the prosecutor said they were prepared to go ahead with the sentencing.

Roth faces sentencing for insurance fraud for faking his own death in the summer of 2012 at Jones Beach in an effort to cash in on hundreds of thousands of dollars in insurance money and for an incident in Freeport for pretending to be a police officer and trying to lure a woman into his van, Hall reported.

Roth's brother was at the courthouse for the planned sentencing.

Roth, who pleaded guilty in March 2013, faces a maximum sentence of 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison. He has already agreed to pay restitution for the costs incurred during the rescue effort.

His son, Jonathan Roth, was sentenced last month to a year in jail for falsely reporting an incident in connection with the fake disappearance.
