Sen. Schumer: USAF Thunderbirds Returning To Jones Beach

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - The United States Air Force Thunderbirds flying team is returning to Jones Beach next Memorial Day.

That's the word Tuesday from Sen. Charles E. Schumer, who has lobbied for its return.

This will be the team's first performance at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach since 2009. The Thunderbirds had been scheduled to perform in 2013 but had to cancel because of federal budget cuts.

"We lost the show for last year, so people were really psyched to have it back after the sequester," show-goer Bob Friedman said in May.

The Navy's Blue Angels flying team performed at the show this past May.

Schumer calls the Thunderbirds' appearance the "cherry on top" of the festive weekend.

As many as 400,000 people attend the annual air show at the Long Island landmark state park.
