Sen. Schumer, Rep. Bishop Call For Extension To Chopper Noise Regulation On Long Island

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- To keep the noise down helicopters flying to and from Long Island's East End have been required for the past two years to fly over water, instead of homes.

"It has quieted down quite a bit," said Fort Salonga resident Lenny Piskorz.

But as 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported, the chopper noise could be back over Piskorz's North Shore home come Aug. 6, when the rule pushing choppers out over the water will expire.

On Tuesday, Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Tim Bishop called on the FAA to extend the over-the-water routes.

"We're calling on the FAA to take a number of steps to ensure peace and quiet is here to stay," Schumer said.

The lawmakers want to make the rule permanent and modified so that helicopters have even less land to fly over.

"It's been good, but the minute that route expires -- if we don't get it renewed -- it's gonna start all over again," Schumer said.

"What I'm happiest about is that for the last couple of years, since the temporary regulation went into place, things have been much, much better in our part of Long Island," Craig Cooper said.
