Sen. Gillibrand Throws Support Behind Petition To Ban Toxic Chemicals In Toys
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With the Christmas shopping season in full swing, there's now a call for a ban on toxic toys.
Standing in front of a table filled with popular name brand toys, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand says there are hidden dangers.
"We're talking about arsenic, mercury and formaldehyde -- serious chemicals and carcinogens," Gillibrand said.
The lawmaker is backing a petition led by the city's Department of Consumer Affairs and Commissioner Julie Menin to pressure the Consumer Product Safety Commissioner to take action, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.
"To investigate chemicals in children's products and ban those that are harmful," Menin said.
Putting 66 chemicals of high concern at the top of the list to go under the federal government's microscope.
Gillibrand says enough is enough.
"Too many of the toys sold to our children contain dangerous toxic materials that have no place in any American toy store, certainly not in the year 2014," she said.
