NYPD Seeks Man Who Groped, Assaulted Woman In Greenpoint, Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are looking for a man who assaulted a woman while she walked her dog in Brooklyn.

As CBS2's Dave Carlin reported, the NYPD has released surveillance video of the suspect, hoping someone will recognize him and come forward with information.

"It's crazy, you aren't safe nowhere," said one resident.

The suspect, described as 5'8" and 200 pounds, had on a blue sweatshirt and blue jeans, police said.

"He looks normal, very normal. These are the people that walk down here every day," said Greenpoint resident Jennifer Achan.

On surveillance video, the suspect is seen turning around, looking over his shoulder back at where police said the crime happened on Manhattan Avenue at Freeman Street.

The incident happened on Sept. 23 around 3 a.m. The 37-year-old victim was walking her dog when the man allegedly slapped her on the rear end, Carlin reported.

Investigators said the woman told them he walked away laughing. Then, as seen on video, police said he went back, returning to the victim and briefly scuffling with her before he walks off again.

"Some people looking to take advantage and you have to be alert when that kind of energy happens," said Greenpoint resident Phillip Martin. "But in this neighborhood, I think this is a pretty safe neighborhood for the most part, but you do have to be careful especially when it gets past midnight."

"Regardless of the size of your dog or what's going on, you still have to pay attention to where you are," said Greenpoint resident Katie Tateishi.

Police said it doesn't appear that the suspect is a repeat offender and isn't believed to be part of a pattern, Carlin reported.
