Coast Guard Suspends Search For Man Seen Jumping Off Staten Island Ferry Near Governors Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a man who was seen jumping off a Staten Island Ferry boat and into the waters of New York Harbor.

Several witnesses say they saw the man jump off the Spirit of America ferry around 10:15 p.m. Thursday near Governors Island. The ferry crew said onboard surveillance video confirmed that the man went overboard, according to the Coast Guard.

Crew members threw a life-ring in the water and deployed a small boat. The Coast Guard, NYPD and fire department then began a search that disrupted ferry service for several hours.

The Coast Guard continued to search for the man through the night before suspending their efforts Friday morning.
