SeaGlass Carousel Opens In Battery Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's like an aquarium that has come to life in Battery Park, where a giant, glass fish carousel is now open to the public.

Ten years in the making, the $16 million SeaGlass Carousel featuring 30 luminescent fiberglass fish officially opened Thursday.

The debut came much to the excitement of Warrie Price, president of The Battery Conservancy.

"Nature, articulture in the sense of botany and the biology of the sea is coming together," Price told WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron.

"I want children to fall in love with the sea so they'll protect the sea," she added. "They'll learn about the sea."

Each seat features a pastel, translucent sea animal encased in a shell-like building.

Remy was one of the first to take a ride.

"It was fun when it went up and down," she said.

And the thrill wasn't lost on adults either.

"I'm like, 'Yes, I'm a mermaid!" one woman joked. "I loved it."
