Schumer Says He Wants Credit Bureaus To Better Notify Customers Of Potential Fraud
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --- Sen. Charles Schumer wants credit bureaus to better notify customers of potential fraud.
Schumer, D-N.Y., said once hackers get a hold of the customers' personal information, it's all downhill from there.
"Sometimes they set up an entirely new account using your name and Social Security number," Schumer told reporters, including WCBS 880's Rich Lamb. "And they go rampant and have a party, and you catch up with it much too late."
Currently, unlike credit card companies, "credit bureau's amazingly are not required to notify a consumer when a third party asks if their credit is worthy," Schumer said.
The senator is urging the national credit reporting bureaus Experian, Equifax and Transunion to notify consumers by phone or email anytime there is an inquiry regarding their credit.
