School Shakeup: Teachers At 2 NYC High Schools To Reapply For Jobs If They Want To Keep Them

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Teachers at two of New York City's most troubled high schools will have to reapply for their jobs if they want to keep them.

City officials announced Friday that all of the teachers at Boys and Girls High School and Automotive High School will have to reapply and sit for interviews if they want to keep working there.

"Every teacher and the principal will all have to reapply for their jobs," First Deputy Mayor Anthony Shorris told WCBS 880's Jim Smith.

He says the overhaul comes after years of failure.

"These schools have a long history of not providing all the support and services that kids need," he said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio promised to take whatever steps are needed ``to give our kids the fresh start they deserve.''

Shorris says they feel other schools can be turned around with minor adjustments, but these two needed much more dramatic restructuring.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina said it's a ``historic day'' for the two schools.

The schools, both in Brooklyn, have struggled academically for years.
