Schieffer: What Will Trump Do If He Doesn't Accept Election Results?

LAS VEGAS (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Bob Schieffer questioned why Donald Trump refused to say at the presidential debate that he will accept the results of next month's election if he loses to Hillary Clinton.

Asked whether he would accept the outcome if Clinton emerges victorious, Trump said, "I will tell you at the time. I'll keep you in suspense."

"This is very, very unusual. It raises the question what will he do if he doesn't accept the results," Schieffer said. "I assume he's talking about filing a lawsuit or something. Surely, he's not trying to stage a coup. I mean, what is he talking about here?"

The CBS News contributor and former "Face the Nation" moderator said Trump's response is "dangerous."

"This is not the way we do it in the United States of America, and there's no other way that you can say it," Schieffer explained. "It's dangerous to be talking that way because it threatens and raises questions about the very foundations of what this nation is about. We have peaceful transfers of power in this country and to somehow suggest that we're not going to do it that way, I mean, what is he talking about?"

Trump has spent the days leading up to third and final presidential debate warning voters that the election will be "rigged."

That contradicted pledges by his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, as well as his daughter, Ivanka.
