Brush Fire Rages In Sayreville, New Jersey

SAYREVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Firefighters late Friday were battling a large brush fire in Sayreville, New Jersey.

The fire was raging near Beth Anne Way in Sayreville, officials said. Windy conditions were fanning the flames late Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were in the process late Friday of clearing away brush to light a counter-fire in order to contain the flames.

The New Jersey Forest Fire service said about five acres had burned as of the late afternoon hours. At one point, half a dozen homes had been threatened, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze and protect them.

A total of 65 firefighters from surrounding municipalities responded.

There was no word late Friday on how the fire started.
