'Sandy Transparency Act' To Provide Information To Victims Who Applied For Recovery Funding

BELMAR, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The Sandy Transparency Act will require officials to provide helpful information to Hurricane Sandy victims who applied for recovery funding.

After foundation and interior flooding problems knocked Krista Sperber's family out of their Belmar home, they are trying to rebuild.

But Sperber says, "It has been a complete nightmare."

Sperber says she was kicked out of the state's grant program because she was asking too many questions, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reports.

"I asked if I could take the documents home with me and compare it against my records. I was told no," Sperber said. "I asked if I could take a picture of them. No. Could I write it down? No."

"And that's the worst thing. It's not knowing," said state senate president Steve Sweeney.

Sweeney says the Sandy Transparency Act he sponsored and now signed into law will help keep victims in the loop from now on.

"They're going to know where they are on the list," Sweeney explained. "What's the expectancy of time? When they're going to get their check."

But it's too late to help Sperber.

"But that's fine, because I was able to stand up and speak out and help thousands of other people that just don't have a voice," Sperber said.
