LISTEN: New Rutgers Football Coach Chris Ash Envisions Big, Fast, Physical Team

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Expect a Rutgers football team that plays with discipline and toughness next season, the Scarlet Knights' new coach said Wednesday.

"My vision of the football team overall, whether it's offense, defense or special teams, is I want to build a big, fast, physical football team that can compete with anybody, anytime, any place," Chris Ash told WFAN's Mike Francesa.

"We're going to be aggressive on defense. We're going to use special teams as a weapon. And we're going to have an offense that can attack you in a lot of different ways and make you defend the width of the field as well as the length of the field."

Rutgers hired Ash, 41, to replace Kyle Flood, who was fired in November after a 4-8 season. Ash previously served as Ohio State's co-defensive coordinator for two seasons, including on the Buckeyes' 2014-15 national championship team.

He said the division the Scarlet Knights play in was part of the reason he was enticed to take the job.

"The Big Ten East is one of the top divisions in college football right now," he said. "It's very exciting. I know this league. It will be my third Big Ten school, so I'm well versed in the Big Ten."

He said he was also swayed by the high school talent in New Jersey and the size of the media market.
