CBS News: Russian Aircraft Buzz US Ship In Baltic Sea
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Russian aircraft have buzzed an American warship in the Baltic Sea twice in the past two days, CBS News reported.
The two incidents were "more aggressive than anything we've seen in some time," a senior defense official told CBS News.
They took place Monday and Tuesday of this week. In Monday's incident, two Russian SU24s made 20 passes of the USS Donald Cook when it was about 70 miles off Kaliningrad in the Baltic Sea. The jets were flew within 1,000 yards of the ship at an altitude of about 100 feet, CBS News reported.
On Tuesday, two Russian KA27 Helix helicopters flew circles around the Donald Cook, taking photos, and the jets again repeatedly buzzed the ship in what the official called a "simulated attack profile," according to CBS News.
The aircraft "were so close they created wakes in the water," the official told CBS News.
