Runners Lace Up For Marathon Weekend On Long Island

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The Long Island Marathon Weekend has arrived.

With sweat on their brows and smiles on their faces hundreds of people crossed the finish line of the weekend's 5k run. Steven Kress turned in a record breaking performance.

"I think I ran somewhere around a 16.20 or 16.25 for 5k," he said, "I feel great. I feel great. I mean it's a perfect day for running. It's a good course."

Melanie Mouzakes is with the organization 'Friends of Karen' she told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall that she was running in memory of her 6-year-old son Taylor who died of cancer.

"Just thinking that I wish he was here with me doing this," she said.

A large police presence that included bomb sniffing dogs was on hand. Bags and backpack were not allowed at the start or finish line.

Marathon weekend will continue on Sunday morning.
