Rockland Group Working To Keep Tappan Zee Pedestrian Traffic Out Of South Nyack Neighborhood
SOUTH NYACK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A new Tappan Zee Bridge watchdog group has been set up to address concerns over the location of a pedestrian path.
As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, political activists on the Rockland County side of the span have teamed up to form a non-partisan watchdog group to keep an eye on the bridge project.
The Tappan Zee Gateway Alliance said its main concern is the landing for the shared use path. The group does not want the path to start in a residential neighborhood in South Nyack.
Some members of the group are instead pushing for the entrance to be off of Exit 10 on the New York State Thruway.
"We would like to see something like Exit 10 if it was viable. We're not quite sure that that is viable. There's other plans that people have talked about, we don't always agree on them," alliance member Cliff Weathers told Adams.
Members of the alliance recently met with bridge project officials to voice their position.
"I'm not always encouraged. I've seen these type of grassroots movements stifled. However, we are resilient. We really want our concerns to be listened to," Weathers said.
The alliance insists they want the path to end in South Nyack, but just want it done properly, Adams reported.
